Although the figure often seems to be the main focus of my work, I regard myself as a landscape painter. A landscape painter deeply puzzled in the face of nature: who has had to resort to looking at nature through the representation of the human form. In the face of nature I need the membrane of landscape, wilderness and memory to keep nature at bay.
Painting human figures allows me to paint nature’s complimentary – a practice that does symbolise an attempt to control nature, but an act that allows me to balance the chaos that nature represents in my life.
I see these paintings as pictures of ‘something else’, the trick is to picture the unsayable, to stop seeing myself or the world as objects of knowledge.
