Vika Fifita Painter

As a child, I didn’t speak much due to hearing problems, and drawing was the only way I knew how to express myself and communicate.
I suppose this was the beginning of my pathway into art, and it turned into journal entries and eventually to paintings. Nothing has changed – I still use my paintings as a form of communication. It remains a fundamental and indispensable part of me.
My studio in Paradise, Tasmania, provides me with a welcome isolation, free from the distractions of the cities and suburbs. The Tasmanian bush gives me a focus that I may otherwise struggle to find.
The documentation of my everyday life will always be a major subject in the production of my work. I can’t paint without having experienced the subject matter. My works are memories and pieces of myself.
