(Sandra) Janine Combes makes contemporary jewellery in her studio on Bruny Island, Tasmania. Her work explores a narrative of nature, cultural identity, memory and belonging.
Janine thinks of her jewellery as small scale wearable ‘sculptures’ – they are intimate objects, worn on the body, imbued with meaning by both the maker and the wearer.
She uses a range of different materials in her artwork including: metals (silver, gold, aluminium), organic materials such as silk, pearls, buffalo horn and Japanese lacquer as well as man-made and recycled materials.
Strong forms, surface texturing and a layering of different materials are all important in Janine’s making.
