Drawing for me is an aesthetic vehicle for understanding, contemplating and absorbing my relationship to place and the natural environment. The concept of place is my entry into nature and I mostly explore place through landscape. Recently, however, I have become more interested in developing atmospheres of landscapes and place rather than identifying specific characteristics or locations. Aesthetically this approach has conjured intricacies of moods ranging from imprisonment and entrapment to liberation and euphoria – both physically and on a psychological level. Within this I explore contrasts between silence and noise, dark and light, shifts in mark making and tone, and expanded and contracted space whilst being strongly influenced by formal photographic and cinematic techniques.
