evandale pop-up exhibition ― summer salon featuring luke wagner

Esteemed Tasmanian painter, Luke Wagner, returns to his beloved Northern Midlands for a magical series of new landscapes, to be showcased at Handmark’s Summer Salon in Evandale.

Like Monet and his Garden, Luke cannot resist the magnetic pull of one location. In his case it’s the Norfolk Plains around Longford, which Luke believes embodies our island’s unique colonial heritage. “I like to delve into the same subject, and paint it again and again. Each time is so different, especially the light.” For Handmark’s pop-up exhibition, Luke captured the magic of mid-winter, “that glorious half an hour of light early in the morning and evening.”

Luke is unveiling 15 works in the Summer Salon. One vista shrouded in fog brings a heavy winter chill to life, while another hints of joy for the day ahead as orange glints pierce the sky. His paintings are exquisite in their detail and evocative subtlety. So stunning in fact, that other works in the same series have been finalists in four major art awards, including the Glover Prize.

Luke’s stunning creations are more than enough to lure you to historic Evandale for the pop-up, which also features works by other Handmark favourites. But it will be just as hard to resist the opening of Summer Salon at the Clarendon Arms Hotel, replete with jazz band and a special menu. The perfect excuse, for a perfect summer outing!

Summer Salon, Handmark’s pop-up exhibition at Evandale runs from December 1 – January 30 at the Clarendon Arms Hotel.
