Steven Carson Painter

I followed a conventional pathway to becoming an artist and have exhibited professionally since 1987.
Most recently I have sought to re-imagine the mundane as lavish. The humble, peculiar, strange and intimate stuff of the everyday, as well as evocative mementos of the past, are the starting points to guide a tactile enquiry.
I look to ordinary materials, structures and marks of daily life to explore ideas about personal and social identity. At the core of my practice is an aim to find ways for memories to arrive, surface or return, and investigate how these can be given new form.
My art is informed by mid-20th century geometric abstraction, craft and handicraft, as well as contemporary design. Vibrant, and sometimes clashing colour, is a consistent element. This creates visibility for the unseen or unnoticed things that inspire me. I have an enduring interest in pattern and ornamentation.
Initially my creative interest lay in ceramics, but the inherent limitations of working with clay also led me to seek out less conventional methods of construction: Mixed-media assemblages, paintings and sculptural works that use diverse materials in place of clay.
