When I start a painting, I only have the vaguest idea of how it  might be when finished.  I work from many little sketches ,usually in pencil, of possible compositions which are quite abstract.  I also use my  sketches made on site of trees, skies, land forms, the sea, moving water, rocks, birds and so on.

In the studio, I construct the paintings from these elements some of which might relate to specific places (Bruny Island, Tasman Peninsular, Mount Nelson, Bass Strait) others are generic seascapes or Tasmanian landscapes.

The work evolves gradually, I make lots of changes and often the final painting comes as a surprise which is sometimes amazing.

Mark-making, the drama of light and darkness and a certain restlessness form the links between  my drawings, prints and paintings.
